You can leave Yonkers. But Yonkers never leaves you. “Raised in the City of Hills” by Michael James is my love letter to the city that raised me—and to everyone who still calls it home, no matter where life has taken them. I was born and raised in Yonkers and spent my first 26 years there. My grandparents raised their family there. Those streets hold generations of our stories. More than 30 years after leaving, I still carry them with me. Yonkers is part of my DNA. From Getty Square to Central Avenue, from the hills of our neighborhoods to the Hudson and the Palisades, this song takes me home. Back to Friday nights, familiar faces, high school pride, and the places we wish we could walk into just one more time. My memories include Roosevelt High School, the Jeffrey Park buildings on the hill, and the Yonkers Pitbulls—a team I helped build as a co-founder, player, and coach. But the heart of this song belongs to the people: the families, friends, coaches, neighbors, and everyday characters who made a city feel like a family. Since sharing this song, I’ve heard from current and former residents whose memories came rushing back. One connection even helped my 83-year-old mother reconnect with the daughter of a childhood friend. I hoped to write something people would feel. Seeing it bring people back into each other’s lives has meant more than I can put into words.
