16 March 1966. Neil Armstrong and David Scott had just made the first docking in space when a stuck thruster sent Gemini 8 spinning at about 296 degrees per second, almost one turn every second. Their vision blurred and the dials were hard to read. This is the minute-by-minute timeline of the crisis, from the mission report: the docking, the spin, the decision to shut down the orbital thrusters and fly the re-entry system, and the emergency splashdown in the Pacific.
00:00 Cold open: 296 degrees per second
00:36 The target: Atlas-Agena, the crew, the Titan launch
02:02 The chase: rendezvous and the first docking (6:33:22 GET)
03:17 The roll: thruster 8 sticks on (7:00:26.7 GET)
04:44 The spin: undocking, 296°/s, "Press on"
06:58 The decision: Houston and the seventh orbit
07:20 The way home: retrofire, splashdown, recovery
08:21 Aftermath: the short circuit, Gemini 9, the road to Apollo 11
Key numbers (GET = ground elapsed time): docking 6:33:22 · thruster 8 stuck on 7:00:26.7 · undocking 7:15:12 · OAMS breakers opened 7:18:16 · stable 7:25:30 · retrofire 10:04:47 · splashdown 10:41:26, about 600 miles east of Okinawa, under 7 nautical miles from target. Roll-rate graphs are simulated/schematic from key values in the mission report, not telemetry replay.
