I made a PowerPoint about Counter-Strike, Elo, and Goodhart’s Law which is the idea that once a measurement becomes a target, people start changing their behavior around the measurement itself.
Counter-Strike players care about K/D, ADR, HLTV Rating, Premier Rating, FACEIT Elo, and basically any other number the game gives us. But how well do those numbers actually measure skill? And what happens when players start optimizing the stat instead of the thing the stat was supposed to represent?
This one gets into Goodhart’s Law, the history and math behind Elo, why team games make skill ratings messy, HLTV Rating 2.0/2.1/3.0, Round Swing, Glicko, TrueSkill, uncertainty, and whether Counter-Strike Elo could actually be improved.
And yes, after several days of reading about rating systems, I am now obviously qualified to fix competitive Counter-Strike.
