Preconditioning isn't two shots and 45 days of waiting. Every week has a different job. A strong program starts before weaning and builds toward calves that are settled, eating, drinking, healthy, and documented by Day 45. In this video, we walk through a practical 45-day calf preconditioning timeline, starting before Day 0 and following the calves all the way to marketing or delivery. You'll learn how to: Prepare fences, bunks, water, feed, records, and facilities before weaning Build vaccination and booster timing around product labels and your veterinarian's protocol Prioritize consistent feed and water intake during the critical first week Increase feed gradually as calves adapt to the ration Watch appetite, behavior, respiration, and fill for early signs that a calf may be falling behind Keep health and treatment records that document the work you've done Protect progress by keeping Week 4 intentionally boring and consistent Calculate average daily gain and cost of gain instead of assuming added weight automatically means added profit The goal isn't simply getting calves through 45 days. It's building a repeatable process: Prepare → Protect Intake → Build Intake → Verify Health → Protect Progress → Deliver 💬 What's the hardest part of preconditioning on your operation: getting calves eating, keeping them healthy, or controlling cost of gain?
