All aviation organisations have Safety Performance Indicators. The real value comes from making sure they actually help you understand and manage what's happening in your operation. In this Final Approach session, I talk through how I'd approach building SPIs that are useful, proportionate and specific to the organisation rather than simply relying on a generic set of indicators. I cover how your occurrence reports, risk assessments and operational changes can help you decide what to measure, why a mix of leading and lagging indicators matters, and how regularly reviewing the data can help you spot when things are starting to move in the wrong direction. I also get into something I've found harder than it sounds, setting targets that actually mean something and give you useful information throughout the year. For me, good SPIs aren't about having more measures. They're about measuring the right things, understanding what the data is telling you, and using it to make better safety decisions.
