SHE WAS FOURTEEN In memory of Francis R. This song was born from a deeply moving family story shared with me by my friend Nancy, a fellow pickleball player. When Francis was only fourteen, her mother died tragically in an accident outside their home, leaving nine children behind. As the second child in the family, Francis left school and her own young dreams behind to help care for her younger brothers and sisters. Her youngest sibling was only six months old, while her brother Guiseppi was barely one and a half. Guiseppi later became Nancy’s father and the storyteller whose memories inspired this song. Their father worked tirelessly to provide for the family, while their eldest brother also took on great responsibility. Francis stood beside them, helping to keep the family together and caring for the younger children so they could grow up surrounded by the warmth, love, and security of their family. The years passed, and one by one the children grew up, found their own paths, and built their lives. Francis eventually found a family of her own, but the love and care she had given to her younger brothers and sisters remained part of their lives and memories. Francis and Guiseppi have since passed away. But her story lives on through the family—and through those who still remember the love and sacrifice she gave so freely. “She Was Fourteen” is my humble tribute to Francis: a young girl who gave up part of her childhood to help her father and older brother care for the younger children, so that they could grow up in the warmth of a loving family. May this song be received as a small gift of love and remembrance to the family of Francis and to Nancy, who shared this precious story with me. Some acts of love are never forgotten. Nine young hearts gathered under one roof, And she chose to stay beside us every day. My youngest sibling was only six months old, And I was barely one and a half. Our father worked to keep us fed and warm, While our eldest brother carried half the load. Chorus She was fourteen, Yet love made her strong. She cared for all the little ones And carried us along. She never asked for anything, She gave with open hands. A sister by her blood, A mother in my heart. Verse 2 She put away her schoolbooks and her youth, And laid her sweetest dreams upon the shelf. She cooked our meals and wiped away our tears, Always putting everybody before herself. The years went by, and one by one we grew, We found our paths and built our lives anew. She watched us leave with tenderness and pride, Knowing that her love had seen us through. Chorus She was fourteen, Yet love made her strong. She cared for all the little ones And carried us along. She never asked for anything, She gave with open hands. A sister by her blood, A mother in my heart. Verse 3 And then she found a family of her own, A husband, and a child to gently hold. Yet all those little hearts she sheltered once Stayed precious in the story of her soul. She never spoke about those difficult years Or the sacrifice she quietly gave away. For the deepest love needs no words at all— It simply lives and breathes from day to day. Bridge And though the years keep moving on, Some things will never change. To me, she is still that gentle soul Who softly called my name. For the mother that I never got to know Was the love she chose to show. Final Chorus She was fourteen When love called her to stay. She gave her youth so we could find Our brighter days. A sister by her blood, A mother in my heart. And every life she touched Still carries what she gave. Outro She was fourteen... Yet love made her strong. A sister by her blood, A mother in my heart.
