Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979): Morpheus for Viola and Piano (1917–1918) Performed live by Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel: Judith Ingolfsson, viola Vladimir Stoupel, piano Recorded live at Griswold Hall, Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, Maryland --- ABOUT THE WORK: Composed between 1917 and 1918, "Morpheus" is one of Rebecca Clarke’s most evocative and sensuous masterpieces for viola. Named after the Greek god of dreams, the work showcases Clarke’s distinct harmonic voice, blending English pastoral lyricism with French Impressionistic color and adventurous, modal chromaticism. Clarke originally premiered the work in 1918 at Carnegie Hall's Aeolian Hall under the pseudonym "Anthony Trent," wary that a program featuring only works by a woman composer would not be taken seriously by contemporary critics. The piece stands today as a cornerstone of the 20th-century viola repertoire, moving from hushed, mystical introspection to soaring, impassioned climaxes. --- ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel Violinist/violist Judith Ingolfsson and pianist Vladimir Stoupel are an internationally acclaimed duo recognized for their intensive exploration of chamber music literature, insightful interpretations, and championing of rare and 20th-century masterpieces. • Judith Ingolfsson: https://judithingolfsson.com • Vladimir Stoupel: https://vladimir-stoupel.com Subscribe for more live performances and chamber music recordings. #RebeccaClarke #Morpheus #Viola #DuoIngolfssonStoupel #JudithIngolfsson #VladimirStoupel #ClassicalMusic #ViolaAndPiano #20thcenturymusic
