TRUE STORY
The Pittsburgh Six: Nuno Pontes and the Great Prison Escape
In January 1997, a remarkable prison escape took place at Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Nuno Pontes, a prisoner known for his safecracking skills, became the mastermind behind a daring plan to escape with five other inmates: Thomas Berkelbaugh, Carmen Keller, George Conard, Leslie Billingsley, and Andrew Heim. Working together, the six men secretly dug a tunnel beneath the prison wall using tools available to them. After months of planning, their escape plan finally succeeded on January 8, 1997, when all six men made their way out of the maximum-security prison.
However, their freedom did not last. Once the authorities discovered the escape, a major manhunt began to track down the six fugitives. Although they had managed to get beyond the prison walls, staying free proved much more difficult than escaping. The men were eventually caught and returned to custody. Their story, known as The Pittsburgh Six, remains a notable prison-break case in American criminal history, showing how an elaborate escape plan can succeed at first but still end in failure.
