The Moon only reflects sunlight. What if it glowed as brightly as the Sun?
In this animated explainer we compare moonlight and sunlight, then imagine the Moon glowing like the Sun: two suns of the same size, no phases, no real night for half the month, double shadows, twice the energy reaching Earth, a runaway greenhouse, and why the Moon could never become a star. Then a milder version – a Moon 100 times brighter – and its effects on bats, owls, turtles, corals, rice that flowers by night length, our sleep and melatonin, Tết Trung Thu, light pollution and the stars, Russia's Znamya space mirrors and China's 'artificial moon' plan.

Note: this is a thought experiment. The runaway-greenhouse threshold is debated; health effects of light at night are still being studied.
