Overnight hike up the Amphitheater to Tugela Falls - Scarier than I thought it would be!

I finally got to hike up to the top of the Amphitheater with my small crew. This hike was filled with loads of apprehension almost from the start as it was the first time doing an overnight hike, first time hiking with that much weight on the back and the first time up the Amphitheater for all of us. The fear of the unknown was very strong. It was also the first time overnighting on top of any peak and the expectation of the cold was actually met! The heights of the mountain were simply dizzying, and very quickly brought back a childhood fear of heights I thought I had overcome. Also, the realisation of the inherent peril climbing up and down the chain ladders only dawned on me at the foot of the ladders - coming from the engineering industry that would have multiple fail safes to protect you in a 40m climb like the one up the first set of ladders. In the end an achievement that will forever remain etched in my memory, because it pushed me to my limits in more ways than one, but perhaps one not to be repeated anytime soon!
