Why Kenyan Immigrant Nurse Maureen Ngure Was Deported by ICE After 20 Years in USA? | The Full Story

Why was a Kenyan nurse deported after nearly 20 years living and working in California? Maureen Wanjiru Ngure, a Kenyan nurse who spent nearly two decades in the United States, was deported to Kenya after being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine immigration appointment in San Francisco. In this report, we follow the full story of Maureen's California deportation case — from her life and nursing career in the Bay Area to her work during the COVID-19 response, her marriage to a U.S. citizen, and her two children. Maureen was detained on August 14, 2026, and deported to Kenya on September 22, 2026. Her detention prompted friends, former colleagues and community members in Concord, California, to organize a campaign demanding her release. A rally was held in her support, while Concord Mayor Laura Nakamura and others appealed for intervention. But Maureen's case also involved a final removal order dating back to 2012. Her marriage to a U.S. citizen and an approved family petition did not automatically cancel that order. The case became even more complicated as Maureen and her family were reportedly considering a move to Canada, where she had been pursuing a nursing opportunity. Instead, she was detained and ultimately deported to Kenya. Her husband and children later travelled to Kenya to reunite with her, while her attorney continues to explore possible legal options for her future. This story examines the facts surrounding the case and the broader issues involving ICE deportations, U.S. immigration law, Kenyan immigrants in America, family-based immigration, removal orders, immigrant families and deportation from the United States.
