A linear function is the simplest function that still does something — and it hides a small, exact fact: its average rate of change between any two points is always the same number, the slope. This short animated lesson defines the linear function, proves that fact, and then uses it as a test: given a table of real data, is it linear or not?
No prior calculus needed. A clean building block before calculus proper.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
• The definition: f(x) = mx + b with m ≠ 0 — slope m, y-intercept b
• The difference quotient (a.k.a. the average rate of change) and its formula
• A full proof that for a linear function the difference quotient between ANY two inputs equals m — the b's cancel, the run cancels
• Using constant rate of change as a linearity test on real data
• Worked example 1: heartbeat measurements — linear or not?
• Worked example 2: E. coli growth — linear or not?
• Increasing vs. decreasing decided entirely by the sign of m
• A short self-check quiz — pause and try each one
