JONGNO 3-GA, COOLEST NEIGHBOURHOOD IN THE WORLD

JONGNO 3-GA here in the South Korean capital city has been tapped as the coolest neighbourhood in the world in 2026 by international city guide media brand Time Out. For more on this title I have Morgan the writer of the article joining us virtually from Singapore. Morgan it's a pleasure. I also have Fabian with German Press Agency dpa here in the studio. Fabian welcome back. 1) Morgan, Jongno 3-ga was third in Time Out's 2021 ranking and is number one in its 2026 list. What do you believe changed in Jongno and in Seoul over those five years? 2) Fabian, you’ve lived and reported in Seoul for years. What feels most different about Jongno today compared with the Jongno you first knew? 3) Morgan, your article brings together old markets, traditional businesses, cafés, nightlife and more. Was that mix what made Jongno stand out to you? 4) Fabian, you’ve written about Seoul’s nightlife and changing neighbourhoods. Does Jongno’s mix of old and new remind you of anywhere in Germany? 5) Morgan, you call Jongno the world’s "coolest" neighbourhood. What did you see there that made that more than just a slogan? 6-1) Fabian, South Korea has also been attracting record numbers of international students, but keeping them is proving harder. Does Seoul feel as welcoming to foreigners as its global image suggests? 6-2) Fabian, what proposals have been shared to address the struggle of maintaining foreign students in Seoul? 7) Morgan, with regard to broader efforts to maintaining identity. Could becoming the world’s coolest neighbourhood actually change what makes a place special? If so, what do you suggest to address it? 8) Fabian, you’ve watched Seoul change for many years.
