Explore how early years practitioners can monitor and promote children’s social development through purposeful observation and responsive support. This lesson explains how social development helps children form relationships, communicate, manage social situations and build emotional wellbeing. It considers the importance of self-esteem, empathy and resilience, and shows how practitioners can record observations to identify strengths, challenges and emerging support needs. You will see how everyday activities can develop sharing, turn-taking and effective communication, including group games, role play, stories and collaborative play. The lesson also highlights how practitioners can model calm language, name feelings and help children resolve disagreements. Positive peer relationships can strengthen children’s sense of belonging and encourage participation in learning. Finally, the lesson considers why early identification matters when children experience shyness, anxiety, difficulty reading social cues or challenges regulating emotions in group settings.
