"The Cause" ("توقضياي") by Arka Saber | English Translation

“The Cause” (“توقضياي”) is a song written, composed, and performed by Beja singer Arka Saber, nicknamed “The Beja Revolutionary Poet” or “The Professor” by his fans. The song outlines the poverty and corruption plaguing East Sudan, which drove the East Sudanese Uprising of the 90s against the government of Omar al-Bashir, an armed uprising Arka Saber took part in. Footnotes: 0:14 - This line references the East Sudanese Uprising, which began in the 90s and ended with the East Sudanese Peace Agreement in 2006. This song is considered a summary of the principles of the Beja Congress, the political party which took up arms against Omar al-Bashir's government during the uprising.
