Destroying pharmaceutical waste properly means over 1,000°C for cytotoxic material in the UK, over 1,200°C in India, and roughly £967 per tonne on one NHS Scotland contract. Expensive.
It is not the expensive part.
France's June 2026 PERIMED study analysed 32,840 returned units and projected €517 million a year of health insurance spending on medicines that were bought and never used. Nearly 70% were prescription-only. England's figure is around £300 million, with £90 million of it sitting in people's homes right now.
Meanwhile a sealed, in-date, unopened box returned to a pharmacy can never be resold — once it leaves the supply chain, nobody can certify how it was stored. A return isn't a recovery. It's a cost.
