The wind-driven Norte Fire broke out near San Clemente, California, around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026, and spread into San Juan Capistrano, burning 570 acres. About 16,000 residents were ordered to evacuate, and seven homes were destroyed or damaged.
Containment reached 92% as of October 21, according to IQAir, but drone crews are still hunting hot spots buried in the ground. Forecasters warn that rain later this week could bring mud and debris flow across the burn area.
Two firefighters were hospitalised with heat-related injuries and are now recovering at home, and all evacuation orders have been lifted. A complaint alleges San Diego Gas & Electric equipment caused the fire, but the cause remains under official investigation.
In this video, we examine how the Norte Fire spread, the drone search for hot spots, the residents who came home, and the legal claim over its cause.
This channel covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
