Cellular Shades Cut Heating 14% in a Federal Test House — With 2 Conditions

🪟❄️ Can a $40 window shade really cut your heating bill? In a real-house test at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, cellular (honeycomb) shades reduced whole-house heating energy by 14.4% compared with bare windows. Against standard vinyl blinds, the savings were 16.6% with a daily schedule and 10.5% when the shades stayed closed all day. 💰 On a $1,200 heating season, 14.4% is about $173. But these numbers come with two conditions: a tight-fitting, insulating shade, and a simple schedule of opening them for sun and closing them at night. A shade that doesn’t fit, or one you never open, may not match the lab’s results. In this video, we break down the lab test, what shades cost, how to check your own windows, and how to avoid trading a draft for condensation. 🏠🔥 ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro: The 14.4% Heating Test 01:01 Why Windows Lose Heat (and What Shades Cost) 03:02 How Cellular Shades Trap Air 05:08 Inside the Washington Lab Experiment 07:04 Three Experiments, Two Conditions 11:25 Checking Your Shades, Condensation, and Recap 📚 SOURCES Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, report PNNL-24857 Rev. 2 (November 2016): the controlled whole-house cellular shade test in two identical 1,500 sq ft homes in Richland, Washington.
