You smell the camp before you see it — and you've already assumed that smells bad. This video takes that assumption apart, chemical by chemical.
You'll find out why sweat itself doesn't smell, and which specific bacterium is actually responsible for body odor. You'll meet a gene called ABCC11 that quietly means there is no single answer to what "ancient humans" smelled like, because different populations carry different versions of it to this day. You'll walk through a real prehistoric camp layer by layer — smoke, grease, work, waste, and skin — and find out why it almost certainly didn't smell like a medieval city. And you'll learn why your own nose isn't the weak, "vestigial" organ you were taught it was, including the 2017 experiment where blindfolded students tracked a chocolate scent trail across a field on their hands and knees.
The real twist isn't biological. It's historical: the idea that natural human smell is something to hide is barely a century old, and it can be traced to a single 1919 advertising campaign.
