Before we started investigating, we took the ride up into the rugged beauty of Linville Gorge in western North Carolina and took some time to talk about the history of the area.
Known for its dramatic cliffs, dense forests, and the Linville River cutting through the gorge, Linville Gorge has earned its reputation as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” The gorge is part of the Pisgah National Forest and became one of the first federally designated wilderness areas in the United States in 1964. US Forest Service
The area also has deep Indigenous history, with ancestral connections to both the Cherokee and Catawba peoples, long before the area was known by its present-day name. US Forest Service
And then there's the story behind the name. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the gorge was named for explorer William Linville, who, along with his son, was killed in the area in 1766. US Forest Service
Come along with us as we make the ride into Linville Gorge, take in the history and scenery, and set the stage for what happened once the investigation began...
