In this homily, we reflect on the miraculous catch of fish and an important truth about the spiritual life: apart from Christ, we can do nothing. The disciples had labored through the night and caught nothing. They were tired, discouraged, and ready to go home. Yet when Christ told Peter to cast the nets once more, Peter responded in obedience: “Nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.” And suddenly, what all their effort had failed to accomplish was given to them in abundance. The Christian life requires real effort. We pray, fast, read Scripture, resist sin, worship, and remain faithful. But the breakthrough itself—the healing, the virtue, the freedom from sin, the deeper union with God—is ultimately given by grace. This can free us from despair when our spiritual lives do not seem to be progressing as quickly as we think they should. Our goal is not to look back and admire how much we have improved. Our goal is to follow Christ. The disciples did not remain on the shore admiring the enormous catch. They left it behind and followed Him. May we remain faithful in our daily labors, ask God to bless them in His time, and keep our eyes fixed on Christ rather than on our own spiritual accomplishments. “Apart from Me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 Christ is in our midst! #OrthodoxChristianity #OrthodoxChurch #Orthodoxy #OCA #JesusChrist #MiraculousCatch #MiraculousCatchOfFish #ApostlePeter #SpiritualGrowth #GraceOfGod #ChristianLife #OrthodoxHomily #OrthodoxSermon #Prayer #Fasting #Repentance #Faithfulness #Discipleship #SpiritualLife #Healing #Virtue #FollowChrist #Theosis #StInnocentOrthodoxChurch #MaconGA
