1857 Revolt: Sepoy Mutiny, Rebellion or India’s First War of Independence? The Revolt of 1857 was one of the most important and controversial events in Indian history. But what actually caused the *1857 Revolt**? Was it really just about the controversial **Enfield rifle cartridges* allegedly greased with cow and pig fat, or was India already facing deep political, economic, military and religious tensions under British rule? In this video, we uncover the *real history of the Revolt of 1857* — from the events at *Dum Dum and Barrackpore**, the uprising of **Mangal Pandey**, and the **Meerut Mutiny**, to the capture of Delhi and the declaration of **Bahadur Shah Zafar* as the symbolic leader of the rebellion. We also explore the stories of *Rani Lakshmibai, Nana Sahib, Kunwar Singh* and the revolt in **Awadh**, while examining the deeper causes behind the uprising. Why were Indian sepoys angry with the British East India Company? How did *Doctrine of Lapse* and the annexation of *Awadh* fuel resentment? Why were farmers, zamindars and taluqdars joining the rebellion? Why did religious fears become such a powerful force in 1857? And if the revolt was a failure, why did the *British government abolish the East India Company’s rule in India in 1858?* Most importantly, was 1857 really the *First War of Independence**, as V. D. Savarkar described it? Or was it primarily a **Sepoy Mutiny* that later turned into a much wider popular rebellion? The answer is far more complicated than either label suggests. The *Revolt of 1857* began with military discontent, but in many regions it became a much broader uprising involving soldiers, peasants, zamindars, taluqdars, rulers and ordinary people. At the same time, the entire Indian subcontinent did not participate in the rebellion, and different groups had very different political and economic goals. This video looks at *1857 in its complete historical context* — its causes, major events, important leaders, British repression, failures of the rebels, and the massive political changes that followed the uprising. Watch till the end to understand why the *1857 Rebellion* remains one of the most debated chapters of **Modern Indian History**.
