Why Umar Refused to Pray Inside the Church of Jerusalem
Why did Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه refuse to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem?
The answer reveals something far deeper than a simple decision to pray outside a church.
When Jerusalem came under Muslim rule, Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه personally traveled from Madinah to receive the city’s surrender. The Christian Patriarch Sophronius reportedly welcomed him and sought guarantees for the safety of Jerusalem’s people and holy places.
But then came an unexpected moment.
When the time for prayer arrived, Umar رضي الله عنه was invited to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
He refused.
Why?
Was it because Islam prohibited Muslims from praying inside a church? Or was Umar رضي الله عنه thinking about something that could happen long after he was gone?
In this Islamic documentary, we explore the story of the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem, Umar ibn al-Khattab’s journey to the city, his meeting with Patriarch Sophronius, the surrender of Jerusalem, and the famous account of why Umar رضي الله عنه chose to pray outside the church.
The decision was not simply about where to pray.
According to the historical account, Umar رضي الله عنه was concerned that future Muslims might eventually treat the place where he had prayed as a Muslim place of worship.
One small decision could create consequences for generations.
