The han-eri — the collar cover on a kimono — had gotten dirty. I took it to the shop I always use, and they turned me down. The owner is elderly now, and the work is too hard on the body. So I sewed it on myself. By hand, for the first time. Same train, same seat, same years. That has been my life for a long time, and somewhere along the way I stopped counting. But this week I did one thing I had never done before. Fewer and fewer people here can mend a kimono, or even put one on. I would like to be one of the ones who can.
