The Metaphysical School of Poets: Origins and Characteristics
The term Metaphysical Poets was initially introduced by Dryden and later popularised by Dr Johnson to describe an intellectual group of writers led by John Donne. These authors prioritised displaying their extensive knowledge, resulting in verses that were deeply religious, spiritual, and philosophical. Their primary objective was to startle audiences by intentionally crafting work that was as obscure, profound, and enigmatic as possible. To achieve this effect, they utilised strained metaphors, extravagant hyperboles, and intricate conceits rather than relying on natural expression. Alongside Donne, notable figures in this movement included Abraham Cowley, Richard Crashaw, George Herbert, Henry Vaughan, Andrew Marvel, and Thomas Traherne, all of whom shared these distinctive stylistic traits.
