Alexander Mackay: The Scottish Engineer Who Built a Road to Bring Christ to Uganda

In 1875, a young Scottish engineer named Alexander Mackay was working in Berlin when he came across a newspaper appeal that would redirect the entire course of his life. The explorer Henry Morton Stanley had written from the court of King Mutesa of Buganda, pleading for missionaries — not preachers alone, but "practical Christians" who could teach, heal, and build. Mackay, trained as an engineer, believed he was exactly the kind of missionary the appeal was asking for. He applied to the Church Missionary Society and in 1876 became part of the first CMS party sent to Uganda. The journey there was brutal before it had even begun. Delayed by illness near the coast, Mackay set to work cutting a road nearly 230 miles inland toward Mpwapwa — fording swamps, bridging rivers, and clearing forest, largely alone. It took him two years just to reach Uganda. By the time he arrived, he was the only member of his original missionary party still standing; the others had died, returned home in broken health, or been killed. For the next fourteen years, Mackay never once returned to Scotland. He became indispensable to Buganda's rulers as an engineer, printer, translator, and doctor — building roads, constructing a printing press, and translating the Gospel of Matthew into Luganda. That very usefulness became both his protection and his prison: kings Mutesa and later Mwanga refused to let him leave even as persecution intensified around him, and fellow missionaries and Christian converts were imprisoned or executed. Mackay stayed anyway, continuing to teach, translate, and print Scripture until ill health finally forced him from Uganda's capital. He died of fever in 1890 at Usambiro, at just forty years old, having never set foot in Scotland again since the day he left.
