every note in this music is a real pulsar, played at its real speed. nothing has been retuned. a pulsar is what's left when a giant star dies: a ball of neutrons the size of a city, spinning and sweeping beams of radio waves through space like a lighthouse. some turn hundreds of times every second. turn that spin into sound and each one plays a note: psr j0437-4715 turns 173.69 times a second, so it sings at 173.69 hz. for 8 hours we stay with an array of radio dishes in the karoo, south africa, on a moonless night, from dusk to 2 a.m. every 40 minutes the dishes turn to a new pulsar and its note becomes the heart of the chord. the other notes are other real pulsars from the atnf catalogue whose speeds happen to be in tune with it, within a few cents. when two stars play almost the same note you hear them beat: j0437-4715 and 47 tucanae c, 14,700 light-years apart, beat once every 49 seconds. what you hear · the choir: each voice is one pulsar at its exact spin frequency · the bell: psr j0901-4046 turns once every 75.9 seconds, and each turn rings it · the slow melody: only overtones, the whole-number multiples that every pulse train contains · the night: a light wind in the scrub, and the motors when the dishes turn what you see the real sky over the karoo that night (15 may 2026), in real time: stars from the yale bright star catalogue at their true positions, the milky way modeled on the real one, the magellanic clouds circling the south pole. the dishes, the land and the light are computed from scratch, not filmed. the array is inspired by meerkat, which times many of these pulsars, but it isn't a copy of it. chapters 0:00:00 dusk · psr j0437-4715, the brightest millisecond pulsar 0:40:00 psr j0737-3039a, a pulsar orbiting another pulsar 1:20:00 the vela pulsar 2:00:00 psr j0901-4046, the bell 2:40:00 psr j0952-0607, one of the heaviest neutron stars 3:20:00 psr b1257+12, the first planets beyond the sun 4:00:00 omega centauri, four of its pulsars in tune 4:40:00 psr j1311-3430, a black widow 5:20:00 psr j1614-2230, almost two suns in a city-sized ball 6:00:00 psr b1620-26, a 12.7 billion year old planet 6:40:00 psr j1748-2446ad, the fastest-spinning star known 7:20:00 psr j1909-3744, one of the steadiest clocks sources: atnf pulsar catalogue v2.9.0 (manchester et al. 2005), deller et al. 2008, caleb et al. 2022, romani et al. 2022, wolszczan & frail 1992, sigurdsson et al. 2003, hessels et al. 2006, nanograv 2023. generated from scratch: sound and visuals. nothing here is stock. #pulsars #sleepmusic #spacemusic #ambientmachine
