One of my favorite day trips to take from Slovenia is to Laghi di Fusine (also known as Belopeska jezera in Slovenian or Weissenfelser Seen in German). These lakes are located just across the border from both Slovenia and Austria, at an elevation of around 920 meters. The two glacial lakes have a remarkable emerald color (which I’ve so come to love) and offer a beautiful view of the Mangart mountain range. The upper lake has more spacious parking and easier access to food options like Capanna Edelweiss, Belvedere, or Bar Ai Sette Nani.
What I love about these lakes is the peaceful forest trail that loops all the way around, it’s an easy circular walk. No cars or bikes here, the trail is reserved solely for pedestrians. These lakes are a treat for the eyes in every season, even in winter when they’re often blanketed in snow. Just keep in mind that access to the trails can be limited depending on the weather. During heavy rainfall, the superiore lake can overflow into the grasslands, making the path temporarily inaccessible. And in winter, I’d definitely suggest bringing crampons.
Between Laghi di Fusine and Lago del Predil lies the town of Tarvisio, where we stopped for lunch before continuing on. Lago del Predil is perfect for swimming. It’s located at about 969 meters above sea level in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and is surrounded by the Julian Alps. This lake is pretty large, with lots of quiet spots around the shore where you can park and head down to relax. There are also plenty of watersports to try. Some parking areas around the lake are paid, so keep that in mind.
You can easily make this a day trip from Ljubljana or Bled, and visit Martuljek Waterfall, Kranjska Gora, Lake Jasna, and the Zelenci Nature Reserve on your way to the lakes.
