In 2021, police were called to one rest area on the edge of Bozeman, Montana 133 times. Not for the county. For one parking lot with a bathroom block and a few picnic tables. This video looks at five U.S. rest areas that truckers go out of their way to avoid after dark, and the one trap behind all of them: the driver who skips a bad lot often has nowhere better to stop.
In this video: the 14-hour clock that decides where a driver ends up at 1 a.m., the national shortage of one public truck parking space for every 11 trucks, the Bozeman rest area closed in 2023 after years of police calls, a trucker shot at a rest area on I-80 near Victor, Iowa, two cases at a rest area near Morrilton, Arkansas (1996 and 2000), the FBI's Highway Serial Killings Initiative started in 2004, the September 2026 stabbing at Bitter Creek on I-80 in Wyoming, the Nashville rest stop killer Bruce Mendenhall, and what drivers can do when every option is bad. Hank, a trucker with 30 years on the road, adds his own two cents along the way.
