In 1838, France attacked Mexico over a long list of complaints. The war is named after just one: a wrecked pastry shop. This is the Pastry War. It starts with Monsieur Remontel's shop outside Mexico City and a claim of maybe 800 pesos. It ends with a 600,000-peso bill, a blockade, a shelled fortress, the King of France's son sent to grab Santa Anna before breakfast, and a general whose left leg got its own state funeral while he was still alive. We also put it up against two other reasons France invaded places, and follow the leg (and his spare legs) all the way to Illinois. Legends are labelled as legends.
