Anyway, here's the writeup from last fall on this absolutely gorgeous boat... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, so this one’s well outside of our norm - While we love our Boston Whalers, there’s always room here for classic, beautiful lines, and unusual designs. I’m talking about the boats you’ll see in the boat yards, marinas, and out on the water, but probably not occupying the booth wedged between Brunswick and SeaDoo at your regional convention center’s annual boat show. Atlas Boat Works built that kind of boat, and while graceful, they’re also rugged, capable of handling the harshest of conditions. Our Acadia 21, however, has experienced an easier, more charmed life - She’s senior owned, and has spent most of her time simply tooling around the freshwaters of Smith Mountain Lake, just outside of Roanoke, Virginia. Her lines fall somewhere between a classic New England Downeaster and an elegant 1920’s Gentleman's Launch. While the feel is all New England, these high quality boats were actually hand built to order in Cape Coral, Florida. A few days ago I spoke with Tom Gasmo, recently retired founder of Atlas Boat Works. He’s a really interesting guy, with a wealth of industry knowledge, which he’s kind enough to share. Tom and his late father started the business in 1986, and while he still maintains the old website, and still answers the phone, in 2023, he sold off the molds and closed the doors after a 37 year run. We spoke for half an hour, about Atlas Boat Works, boat construction, the marine industry, and so on. I’ve talked with a lot of these old school boat builders over the years - they all seemed to know each other, were all about build quality, cared little for corporate cookie cutter methods, and tend to tell good stories. Here’s a few bullet point details about our incoming ABW Acadia 21- -She’s had two senior owners since new. -Powered by a freshwater cooled, 75hp Yanmar turbo diesel inboard capable of several thousand trouble free hours. -She has a semi displacement hull with full length keel. Wait -what does that mean? So, we're all used to these YCM Boston Whalers with planing hulls that jump right up on top of the water and run like a scalded dog. Well, this is different, this is a semi displacement hull. A planing hull rides on top, and is fast, a displacement hull is slow, stable, comfortable -and does not get on plane, instead pushing water out of the way, essentially plowing through - think trawler, or Disney Cruise Ship. A semi displacement hull meets in the middle, combining a comfortable, efficient, stable ride with the ability to partially achieve plane. In short - this very cool, super fuel efficient boat can literally cruise around all day on a few gallons of diesel, but she ain’t a racer. Continuing… -All underwater hardware is high quality Bronze - rudder, skeg, prop, bearing, and thru-hulls. -She’s 21' 3” in length -Her beam is 7’0 -She drafts 2’ (there’s a keel, shaft, prop and rudder down there!) -Dry weight is 2,400 pounds -She holds 34 gallons of diesel -Lots of comfortable seating with cushions bow and stern. -Tandem Axle Magic Tilt Trailer included Whether you see yourself out for a picnic cruise with friends, having cocktails at the yacht club, teaching the grandkids to fish, or fishing the capes - you need to buy this boat before I do.
