What Power Does to Officers | What I Learned in 16 Years of IAS

What does power slowly do to a person? Most officers enter the service young, ambitious and idealistic. But once you enter a system where people call you “Sir,” wait for you, open doors for you, and rarely say no, your sense of what is normal can begin to change. In this video, I reflect on what I saw during 16 years in the IAS: how hierarchy enters everyday behaviour, how officers can become insulated from the people they serve, why authority gets confused with expertise, why honest feedback disappears, why the next posting becomes more important than the present job, and why some apparent arrogance may also come from helplessness inside a highly constrained system. This is not an argument that all officers become arrogant. It is an attempt to understand a larger question: how institutions, privilege, hierarchy and weak accountability gradually shape human behaviour. And towards the end, another question: if cars, bungalows, protocol and people calling you “Sir” are only symbols, then what is real power?
