A convincing itinerary is only the start. Can your travel systems turn it into a trip that is priced, available and ready to book?
In this archive episode of the Everything AI in Travel podcast, I speak with Varun Gupta, founder and CEO of Pathfndr.io, about the technology behind personalised holidays. We discuss its work with Thomas Cook India, the limits of older travel systems and why solving travel-data problems is different from building a chatbot.
Got a travel problem AI might solve? Find the AI you need: tell me what's frustrating you and I'll personally introduce you to someone who can help.

This conversation is from September 2024. Customer projects, route coverage, integration times and future plans reflect the time of recording, not current availability.
We dig into:
🧠 Why AI in travel is more than generative AI
🛍️ Moving from a consumer tool to a travel operating system
🏢 The Thomas Cook India integration and the enterprise holiday business
🗺️ Connecting destination knowledge with live prices and availability
⚖️ Optimising routes, accommodation and activities around traveller choices
📍 Why a hotel's location score depends on the purpose of the trip
🔗 Bringing an agency's own contracts and supplier APIs into the same system
💻 Why yesterday's system flexibility can become today's limitation
🧩 The gap between API documentation and a working integration
👥 Keeping human judgement in the last part of the recommendation
🎓 Training, champions and support as part of changing a travel business
💬 Separating natural-language interfaces from the travel-data engine
Varun describes Pathfndr as an optimisation problem: how do you combine destinations, transport, accommodation and activities in a way that fits the traveller's time, budget and preferences? A more expensive hotel is not always the right hotel, and a popular activity is not always the right recommendation.
For established travel businesses, the supply relationships matter too. We look at how their own negotiated deals and offline contracts can sit alongside wider inventory, rather than being discarded when a new platform arrives.
One of the most useful parts of the conversation is about adoption. Easier software does not automatically change how people work. Varun explains why the team includes training and support in large-company projects and uses internal champions to help the change stick.
The commercial question is whether better technology gives travel sellers more time for the judgement and service customers value. That requires connected data and working operations, not only a better-looking itinerary or a fluent conversation.
