The Freshmen — The Verve Pipe | A 90s Comfort Classic for Cold Days

Much of the country is locked in a deep freeze—and some songs feel like pulling a warm blanket a little closer. Recorded on April 7, 2011, this live studio performance of “The Freshmen” captures The Verve Pipe during an intimate BackStage Pass session for WKAR PBS. It was spring then—but it’s landing right now during one of those cold stretches when familiar music feels especially comforting. A 90s alternative classic, played raw and close—warm in the way familiar songs live inside a memory, and sometimes become one. For anyone who grew up in Michigan—or passed through East Lansing—this performance carries extra weight. Long before algorithms shaped discovery, this was the kind of song that lived on college radio, in rotation at 88.9 The Impact, drifting through dorm rooms, apartments, and car rides around campus at Michigan State University. Not background noise—something you actually listened to. It’s also a reminder of how music has always moved through this community—quietly, collectively, and with staying power—and how public media helped document artists long before they reached wider stages like MTV, back when that still meant something. Nostalgia isn’t about going backward. It’s about recognizing the moments that shaped you—and sometimes finding a song that does it all over again. Whether this brings you back to something you remember, or becomes a future memory for the first time, we hope it’s keeping you warm on these cold winter nights.
