6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. A full-time job — and then everything at home. I'm Gaku, 37. I quit my old job near Tokyo before it broke me, and our family moved to Nagano to start over. A few weeks ago, I went back to work full time as a salaryman. Before anyone wakes up: breakfast for three — a cheese omelet for my wife, natto rice for me, pancakes or oyaki for my one-year-old daughter. Trash day, a vending-machine coffee, the drive to work. After work: this season's new rice (5 kg for ¥2,300), dinner while a kids' show does the babysitting, tonkatsu for us and salmon pasta for her — which she flatly refused. Then the bath, drying her curly hair, wiping the floor, the dishes, the laundry. My wife fell asleep before our daughter, so bedtime stories were mine. Honestly, I'm busier after I get home than at work. But this time with my daughter matters, too. Is this normal where you live? I'd love to hear in the comments. ▶ My wife and daughter left:    • I Got the Job. Then My Wife and Daughter L...   ▶ They came back:    • My Wife and Daughter Came Back. She Wouldn...   Gaku | 37 | A tired Japanese father, starting over — money, work, and family.
