At the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, Germany and the Republic of the Marshall Islands brought together Pacific and international partners to reflect on almost a decade of cooperation on climate-friendly maritime transport and its relevance for the wider Pacific.
The German-hosted side event, “𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐩 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜,” featured Parliamentary State Secretary Bettina Hagedorn of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), Marshall Islands Minister for Transportation, Communication and Information Technology Hilton Kendall, Presidential Special Envoy for Maritime Decarbonisation Albon Ishoda and German Ambassador Dr Andreas Pfaffernoschke.
At the centre of the discussion was the 𝐋𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 (𝐋𝐂𝐒𝐓) project, commissioned by BMUKN through the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 (𝐈𝐊𝐈) and implemented by GIZ together with Marshallese and international partners since 2017.
The event highlighted practical experience generated through LCST, including the wind-assisted inter-island vessel Juren Ae, as well as maritime skills development, institutional capacity, technology development and policy support. Discussions also explored how these lessons can contribute to Pacific-led efforts to advance more sustainable and resilient maritime transport at regional scale.
The recording provides the full discussion from the side event in Koror, Palau, on 31 August 2026.
