Title: The Three Daughters-in-Law: A Three-Tiered Tale of Farming and Cooking
Characters:
Mother-in-law: Kamala Devi (48)
Father-in-law: Mohan Ji (50)
Three sons: Raghav (30), Mukul (32), Mayank (34)
Three daughters-in-law: Neha (29), Shilpa (30), Priyanka (32)
Another son: Anurag (33)
Wife: Divya (30)
Story Begins
Narration: It has been pouring heavily since morning. The unpaved village lanes are waterlogged. On the outskirts of the village, a small house made of mud and old bricks stands drenched in the rain; water is dripping from the roof in several places. Inside, the entire family sits in silence, watching the rain outside.
Kamala Devi (48): (Looking up at the sky) God willing, this rain will stop soon.
Mohan Ji (50): I just pray to God that we can somehow keep making ends meet.
Narration: Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the three daughters-in-law are trying to light the stove using damp firewood. They manage to get a fire going with great difficulty. Neha is grinding green chilies, garlic, and salt on a grinding stone to make chutney. Shilpa is roasting rotis, while Priyanka is rolling out the dough.
Neha (29): (While grinding) This is all the chutney we can make for today.
Shilpa (30): I wonder when our good days will come.
Priyanka (32): For now, everyone will have to fill their bellies with whatever we have.
Narration: A short while later, the three daughters-in-law emerge with dry rotis and chutney. The entire family sits together on a mat spread across the floor. Two dry rotis and a small portion of chutney are placed on everyone's plate. Outside, the rain continues to intensify.
Raghav (30): (Watching the rain) There won't be any wage labor possible today. The whole day will be lost to the rain. Narration: Mukul and Mayank look at each other. Both remain silent for a while.
Mukul (32): Raghav, if you have some money, please give it to us. We’ll try to go into town today and look for work.
Raghav (30): (Taking money out of his pocket) Brother, take whatever I have. If you find work, pay me back; if not, it doesn't matter.
Narration: Both brothers accept the money, but their eyes drop in shame.
Mukul (32): (To himself) He is our younger brother, yet we have to ask him for money.
Mayank (34): (To himself) What a severe test of a person's resolve necessity can be.
Narration: After the meal, everyone gets busy with their respective chores. The rain stops by evening. The three daughters-in-law are sitting outside the house, enjoying the cool breeze. A large three-story house is under construction a short distance away, with several laborers working there.
Neha (29): (Looking at the three-story house) A household can't run on just one person's earnings. Why don't the three of us go and work there as laborers too?
Shilpa (30): Yes, *Didi*, we can finish the housework early in the morning. After that, we can work there all day.
Priyanka (32): If the three of us are together, we won't feel scared, and some money will come into the household.
Narration: The next morning, the three daughters-in-law wake up before sunrise. They quickly finish the household chores—mud-plastering the floors, fetching water, cooking, and washing dishes. Then, tying their dupattas around their heads, they head to the construction site of the three-story house. There is a shortage of laborers there.
Contractor (Male, 45): (Looking around) Very few laborers have turned up today. Will you work?
Neha (29): Yes, Malik (Boss), we will work all day.
Contractor (Male, 45): Alright, the three of you can work here from today. Narration: The three daughters-in-law begin the work of lifting bricks, mixing cement, and hauling sand. After a hard day's labor, they receive their first wages in the evening.
Priyanka (32): (Looking at the money in her hand) For the first time, I’m holding money earned through my own hard work.
Shilpa (30): We’ll definitely take some vegetables home today.
