The decades long battle to save the remaining 26 old town beach front structures from demolition in Hua Hin may have finally been lost. Tens of Thousands of people would have enjoyed meals and drinks out on the old wooden piers, relaxing at sunset with the ocean breeze, while the waves rolled in below the old timber floor boards. However it has been ruled that the structures never had the proper rights or permission to build on those sites and are deemed illegal structures. For some, the demolition risks damaging the old town charm while others say the structures were illegally built and should have gone years ago, and claim they have benefitted from years of rent free trading. Heated debate over the future of the beach front and the many residents that will be directly affected has raged for years in court. One thing that is not in dispute is the piers removal will change the old town waterfront dramatically. The only question remaining is will it be for the better or worse. No one can argue that the decision has been rushed. Even after the supreme court ruled against the parties that remain, the move out, demolish orders and deadlines have come and gone, the municipality has taken a slowly slowly approach giving plenty of time to plan and years for residents to make new arrangements.. Recent events would suggest that this is no longer going to be a quiet polite request to vacate with no real action taken. Switching off electricity and water may be the next step of gentle persuasion. If you want to experience a low tide walk between thousands of piles holding up old timber beams and high quality dining above the waves, this is not the time to put off a visit to Hua Hin everything could change at any moment. Once the demolition crews go in there will be no trace the timber piers ever existed.
