The death toll from strikes in two areas of West Kordofan state on Sunday evening was 150, sources told the Sudan War Observatory, which tracks the conflict that erupted in 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In Abyei, a disputed border area between Sudan and South Sudan, 153 people were killed when drones hit a market on Monday, the region's information minister said. A military source told the BBC the army had carried out the Abyei attack, saying the market was a fuel supply site for the RSF.The attack has raised tensions between South Sudan and Sudan, which jointly administer Abyei, as they both claim ownership to the oil-rich region in a dispute that has remained unresolved since South Sudan ceded in 2011. South Sudan has summoned Sudan's ambassador to lodge a formal protest. There are fears the conflict could spill across the border. / NATO is deploying additional patrol aircraft and intelligence personnel to the Black Sea, a spokesman for the alliance said, after a series of deadly drone attacks in the region widely blamed on Russia but denied by the Kremlin. “Allies have or will send additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, explosive exploitation teams, intelligence personnel, drones and more to the Black Sea,” said Colonel Martin O’Donnell on Tuesday “The most important thing we can do, however, is to increase our situational awareness in the region through increased sensors and data sharing,” he added. NATO, along with Bulgaria and Romania, has not directly attributed the recent spate of attacks to any country. Military analysts have said Russia almost certainly carried out the attacks but Moscow has not acknowledged any responsibility. In an attack on October 5, Romania reported two people dead after their ship caught fire and sank in Black Sea waters. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of being responsible. / Italy approved a raft of security measures on Tuesday including a new offence of violent participation in a demonstration, tougher ‌penalties for rioters, and financial liability for parents whose children take part in vandalism and looting. The move came after unrest swept northern Italian cities at the weekend, including the financial capital Milan, where gangs of mainly young people went on the rampage, smashing windows, robbing shops and attacking police. France will reinforce police with troops and mount a huge security operation for more protests planned on Saturday, the government said on Tuesday, acknowledging failures in its response to last weekend's violence. "The deployment next Saturday will be massive," Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu ‌said, adding that the immediate priority was to restore order after rioting and looting swept Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other cities on October 17. / The Russian military ‌struck three cargo vessels in Ukraine's port of Reni and two other cargo vessels en route to Odesa, Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday. Russian forces also hit two logistics hubs in the ‌Volyn region and in the city of Khmelnitskiy, it said, adding that the vessels and hubs were all being used for military purposes. / Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday said France has been hit by an “invasion of extremist Islam,” after weekend protests over economic conditions degenerated into riots. In an interview, the prime minister said French leaders failed to prepare for the unrest, claiming it was fueled by extremist Muslims despite the diverse mix of French society that took to the streets in major cities, including the capital Paris. “They did not prepare in time; they simply gave up. They succumbed to the invasion of extremist Islam,” Netanyahu said, according to the interpreter’s French translation on French-language channel i24News. / The military on Tuesday announced that Israeli strikes in Gaza over the past day killed two Hamas operatives, including a terrorist who took part in abducting the body of Israeli hostage Shani Louk during the October 7 onslaught. The killing of Tamer Muhammad Ibrahim al-Sabbagh in the northern Gaza Strip’s Jabalia on Monday marked the final member of the Hamas cell that was seen abducting Louk on October 7, 2023, with three others killed earlier in the war and one captured by Israeli forces.
