What If Tyrion Lannister Hatched a Dragon Egg Beneath the Red Keep

What if Tyrion Lannister never traveled north to Winterfell? On the eve of King Robert's royal progress, Tyrion slips down into the vaults beneath the Red Keep. He walks among the black bone skulls of the Targaryen dragons. In a stone alcove thick with dust, he finds a petrified egg. Spilled blood and hot coals crack the shell until a live dragon crawls out. Tyrion stays behind in King's Landing to raise the beast in secret. He names the hatchling Vermithrax. Hiding a growing dragon beneath Maegor's Holdfast is difficult. Cersei and the Small Council watch every corridor. When King Robert dies and Ned Stark is arrested, Tyrion steps in to alter the trial on the marble steps of Baelor. Soon, Stannis Baratheon brings his fleet against the capital. Wildfire meets dragonflame in the night sky over Blackwater Bay. From the vaults beneath the castle to the battlements of the Mud Gate, a living dragon changes the War of the Five Kings. Tyrion keeps the beast hidden until the city faces ruin. When the smoke clears above the river, black wings circle the Red Keep, and the smell of sulfur hangs over the water.
