In the early 1900s, Seattle decided that one of the hills blocking the expansion of downtown had to disappear.
Workers attacked Denny Hill with powerful water jets, mechanical shovels and conveyor systems, removing millions of cubic yards of earth.
Streets were lowered, buildings were demolished or moved, and some houses were left perched high above the new city below.
Over several decades, Seattle permanently reshaped its own geography to create flatter streets and more usable downtown land.
Would you have removed the hill, or built the city around it? Let me know in the comments.
