We Recreated the Mission That Saved NASA's First Space Station | Spaceflight Simulator

In 1973, NASA launched three astronauts aboard a Saturn IB to visit Skylab, America's first space station, after its meteoroid shield was torn away during launch. The Skylab 2 crew faced the challenge of protecting the station from extreme solar heating and freeing a jammed solar array. Their work helped make Skylab habitable and allowed the station to continue its scientific mission. In this video, we recreate the historic Skylab 2 mission in Spaceflight Simulator — from the Saturn IB launch and rendezvous with the station to the emergency repairs, spacewalk, and crew's return to Earth. MISSION OBJECTIVES 1. Launch the crew aboard a Saturn IB 2. Rendezvous and dock with Skylab 3. Deploy an improvised sunshield 4. Free the jammed solar array 5. Return the crew safely to Earth The crew spent nearly 28 days in space, setting a new human spaceflight endurance record at the time.
