LINE vs LENGTH in Bowls – Why Length Is Harder to Master

What is the difference between LINE and LENGTH in bowls — and why can length take so much longer to master? In this video, Richard explains one of the most important skills in bowls: understanding the difference between choosing the correct line and delivering the bowl with the correct length, or weight. LINE is the direction and path you choose for the bowl. LENGTH — often referred to as weight — depends much more on learned judgement and your body’s ability to respond to it. And that judgement isn’t always straightforward. The speed of an indoor rink can change because of factors such as temperature, humidity and playing conditions. The distance of the jack matters too. As the jack gets further away, the bowl travels further and the arc it takes becomes wider. That means a player is constantly judging how much weight is required for the particular length and conditions in front of them. There is another complication: a bad line can sometimes disguise itself as a bad length. Put all these variables together and it becomes much easier to understand why mastering length can take such a long time.
