Elections in Pakistan-administered Kashmir were held from 2 to 10 August 2026, yet even before the polls, residents reportedly faced challenging conditions due to ongoing sit-ins, tensions, strikes, and internet shutdowns across the region. One factor contributing to these difficult conditions was a sit-in led by the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) in Rawalakot that had been going on since early June. Several deaths were reported during the state action against the protesters. On 27 July, clashes between security forces and protesters during a long march towards Muzaffarabad resulted in dozens of deaths, further escalating tensions.
