Dentures versus implants is one of the most common decisions Dr. Spiros Karas helps patients make, and most people are only ever told half the story. In this video he gives the honest comparison, told the way he'd explain it across the desk. Dr. Karas is a general dentist in New Jersey with over thirty years of experience, and at his Manalapan practice he does both dentures and implants every week, so this is not a sales pitch for one over the other. It is how to actually decide which one fits your mouth and your life.
The real difference comes down to one thing: a denture rests on top of your gums and comes out, while an implant goes into the bone and stays. That single difference drives how each one feels, what you can eat, and how long it lasts. Dentures, honestly, can be a very good choice. They look good, they bring your smile back, and they cost the least up front. The part people are rarely told is that a denture sits on the gums, so it can move when you eat or talk, and the bone underneath slowly shrinks over the years, so a denture that fit perfectly at first often needs to be relined or remade.
Implants work differently. Because the post replaces the root and anchors into the bone, an implant feels much more like a natural tooth. You can bite into real food, it does not move, and it does not come out at night. The honest trade-offs are that implants cost more up front, they involve a minor surgery, and not everyone is a candidate on day one. One point that deserves more weight than it usually gets: implants protect your jawbone, and dentures do not, which is why missing teeth can slowly change the shape of the lower face over time.
There is also a third option most people are never told about. A small number of implants can hold a denture that snaps onto them, so it stays put while you eat and laugh but costs less than replacing every tooth individually. For many patients, that in-between option is the sweet spot. Which path is right for you comes down to how much movement would bother you, what you want to eat, your overall health, and what you are comfortable investing. And the longer you wait with missing teeth, the more bone you lose, which can quietly narrow your options later.
Dr. Karas welcomes patients from Manalapan, Freehold, Marlboro, Englishtown, Old Bridge, Howell, and the surrounding Monmouth County, New Jersey area.
