Unlike the ferries to Naoshima, Teshima, and other popular islands, Oshima is served by a government-operated boat. The boat is free of charge, and there is no need to purchase a ticket. Oshima also has a unique and important history. The island is home to the National Sanatorium Oshima Seisho-en, which was established in 1909 to isolate people with Hansen’s disease.
