The Who came back to England at the end of 1969, eager to put out a live album from concerts they had recorded earlier in the US. However, Pete Townshend wasn’t thrilled about sifting through all the recordings to pick the best ones. He had even told sound engineer Bob Pridden to just burn the tapes, which Townshend later said was "one of the stupidest decisions of my life."
So, they set up two shows—one at the University of Leeds and another at the University of Hull, just to record and release a live album. They played in Leeds on February 14, 1970, and then Hull on February 15. However, they ran into some technical issues during the Hull show, the bass guitar didn’t get recorded on some tracks—so it became even more important to release the Leeds concert as the live album.
