Helsinki-Vantaa Airport BHS Modernization | Case Study | Dimark

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is one of the largest international hubs in Northern Europe, serving over 15 million passengers annually and handling increasingly complex baggage flows, particularly on Europe–Asia routes. The baggage handling system in the arrivals area required a comprehensive modernization, delivered entirely under live airport operations. The project was executed in four carefully planned phases, allowing uninterrupted baggage handling throughout the upgrade. Close coordination with the airport and construction teams ensured smooth transitions between each stage. The upgraded system includes 124 devices, 7 make-up carousels with a total length of approximately 490 metres, and an overall system length of 1098 metres. To maintain operational continuity, a temporary baggage line was installed during construction. Custom engineering solutions, including a specially designed carousel and a flexible ceiling-mounted support system, enabled adaptation to real on-site conditions and structural constraints. The entire modernization was completed with no disruption to airport operations, in full compliance with the latest IATA requirements. The project was delivered on time and within budget, providing a reliable and easy-to-maintain system ready for future operational demands.
