The concert was for charity. The last note was apparently personal. VH1 Divas Live brought some of the biggest voices in music together to support music education—and gave viewers a front-row seat to the delicate business of asking legends to share the spotlight. This documentary revisits the first three concerts, from 1998 to 2000: Aretha Franklin’s air-conditioning ultimatum, the Céline Dion exchange that Mariah Carey saw very differently, and the Tina Turner–Elton John rehearsal clash that helped derail their planned joint tour. We’ll also revisit TLC’s withdrawal, the debate over whether Shania Twain belonged in the original lineup, and the moment Diana Ross became the name above the title. With Whitney Houston, Cher, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Gloria Estefan, and more entering the picture, VH1 kept raising the stakes. But what made those first concerts so compelling—and why did that spark become so difficult to recreate? Welcome to the Diva Hunger Games. Was Céline challenging Aretha—or answering her? Tell me where you stand in the comments. Subscribe for more music history and the stories behind the performances. Thanks for watching!
