Follow one batch of raw gold and one team through a refinery, from secure delivery to the vault. No talking, just machine and lab ASMR.
WHAT YOU ARE SEEING (simplified)
Raw gold usually arrives as rough, unrefined bars (called doré) or as scrap. It is checked, weighed and sampled first.
Assay: small samples are tested (for example with X-ray analysis and fire assay) to find out how much gold the metal really contains.
Gold melts at about 1,064°C. An induction furnace melts the metal, which is then cast into flat plates.
Electrolytic refining: the plates are hung in tanks of acidic liquid. An electric current carries pure gold to a collecting plate, where it grows as golden-brown crystals. Refineries can reach about 99.99% purity this way.
The crystals are rinsed, dried, melted again and cast into bars.
Finishing: bars are cleaned, polished, weighed and checked again. Real bars are stamped with the refiner's mark, a serial number and the purity; this AI video shows blank bars on purpose.
Security: gold is handled in secure areas and stored in a vault.
Dust and residues are collected so that even tiny amounts of gold are recovered.
NOTE: This is a simplified story. Methods differ between refineries (some use chemical refining instead of electrolysis), and a standard large bar weighs about 12.4 kg. Details here are illustrative.
